Iran Press/Iran News: US President Donald Trump has instructed his administration to temporarily halt funding to the World Health Organization (WHO) over its handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
Seyyed Abbas Mousavi, on Wednesday, called the decision as another step in the direction of weakening multilateralism and international institutions by the US government.
Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman said that the health, well-being, and safety of the people of the world are directly endangered by the deadly coronavirus, adding: "The US is suddenly punishing the only global health coordinator in the worst possible time and in the midst of a pandemic."
Emphasizing that Donald Trump's main goal in suspending the WHO funding is to cover up the US government's inefficiency in controlling the coronavirus in the country, Mousavi urged the international community to neutralize the US unilateral measures and stand by the WHO.
"American politicians need to realize that this is a violation of their obligations to the international community," he added.
The European Union has also joined the worldwide condemnation of US President Donald Trump's decision to halt funding to the World Health Organization, saying on Wednesday it was unjustified during the coronavirus pandemic.
COVID-19 has infected nearly 2,000,000 people around the world and killed at least 129,000 people, while more than 496,000 have recovered.
The US now has the highest number of known cases of coronavirus in the world with more than 618,000 confirmed cases, of which more than 26,000 have died.
