Iran Press/West Asia: The Arab Contact Group on Syria, joined by foreign ministers and representatives from Bahrain, France, Germany, Qatar, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States, the European Union, and the UN Special Envoy for Syria, discussed the latest developments in Syria.
The participants emphasized their support for the Syrian people during what they described as a pivotal moment to work toward a secure, peaceful, and hopeful future. They reiterated their commitment to principles deemed crucial for the well-being of Syrians, the region, and the global community.
The joint statement underscored the necessity of a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political transition. This transition, it stated, must result in an inclusive, non-sectarian, and representative government formed through a transparent process in line with the guidelines of UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
The diplomats also reaffirmed their support for the UN Special Envoy for Syria, urging the UN Secretary-General to enhance the organization's presence on the ground. Additionally, they emphasized their dedication to Syria's unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty while advocating for the respect of human rights, including protections for women and minorities.
The statement called for the preservation of Syrian state institutions that provide essential services to the population, framing these as vital for long-term stability and recovery.
