Iran Press/ America: Former US President Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court on Thursday to block a demand for White House records from the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot by a mob of Trump supporters.
Trump's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to reverse lower court rulings against the former president, who has fought to block the records even after Joe Biden waived executive privilege over them. The federal appeals court in Washington previously ruled the committee had a “uniquely vital interest” in the documents and Trump had “provided no basis" for it to override Biden and Congress.
The US President Joe Biden had declined to invoke privilege over the disputed documents.
The Supreme Court is not obligated to hear Trump’s lawsuit, which seeks to prevent the National Archives from giving the House committee hundreds of pages of records from the Trump White House.
The former US president asked that until the Supreme Court decides whether to take his case, it blocks the records from being sent to the panel in the meantime.
Later Thursday, lawyers for the Jan. 6 House committee asked the Supreme Court to act sooner than its normal rules call for in considering whether to accept the case, citing “the indisputable importance and urgency of the select committee’s investigation.”
More than 670 people have been charged with taking part in the riot at the Capitol. It was the worst attack on the seat of the US government since the War of 1812 and the only time power in the United States has not been transferred peacefully. 219
