Three million Iranian pilgrims to visit Iraq during Arbaeen

The Iranian Ambassador to Iraq said that 3 million Iranian pilgrims are expected to visit the neighboring country during Arbaeen pilgrimage.

Iran PressMiddle East: Speaking at the Arbaeen Central Headquarters on Monday, the Iranian Ambassador to Baghdad Iraj Masjedi said that as many as 2,000 coaches are also needed during Arbaeen Pilgrimage in Iraq this year.

Masjedi added that it is up to the Iraqi side to host and hold the Arbaeen processions, Iran Press reported.

The Iranian ambassador to Baghdad further pointed out that given the cancellation of visas, 3 million pilgrims are expected to take part in Arbaeen processions in Iraq, stressing the need for preparation and proper planning.

The Arbaeen Pilgrimage is the world's largest annual public gathering that is held every year in Karbala, Iraq at the end of the 40-day mourning period following Ashura, the religious ritual for the commemoration of the martyrdom of the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (blessings of God upon him and his progeny) and the third Shia Imam, Hossein ibn Ali in 680 AD.

Anticipating Arbaeen, or the fortieth day after the martyrdom, the pilgrims make their journey to Karbala on foot where Imam Hossein (PBUH) and his companions were martyred and beheaded by the army of tyrant Yazid in the battle of Karbala.
