Syria requested the United Nations Security Council to hold an urgent meeting to discuss the decision of the United States to officially recognize the Golan Heights as Israeli territory.

Iran Press/Middle East: Syrian officials demanded on Tuesday night a UN Security Council meeting after the US recognized Golan Heights as Israeli territory.

This request was made after that US president 'Donald Trump', signed an official proclamation formally on Monday, recognizing Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights, Daily Express reported.

Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu was by Trump’s side as he made the statement.

Syria said Trump’s recognition was a blatant attack on its sovereignty.

On the other hand, the secretary general of Lebanon's Hezbollah movement, Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah called the US recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights as a violation of the international consensus on the issue.

Meanwhile, thousands of protesters took to the streets of Syria to condemn US President Donald Trump’s decision to sign an executive order making the claim.

Protests began after Trump and Netanyahu’s conference in Washington yesterday.

Many of protesters were carrying banners reading ‘Golan is Syrian’ as they marched.

Israel occupied the Golan Heights in June 1967, and formally annexed it in 1981, a move that has never been recognized by the international community.
