Iran Press/Iran news: The new warship, comes equipped with a domestically developed close-in weapon system (CIWS).
Sahand is the third destroyer produced as part of the Mowj (Wave) project, Iran Press reported.
Iran has so far launched different classes of domestically-built destroyers as part of a broad project known as Mowj (wave). The Navy has already received Jamaran and Damavand destroyers, developed by the local experts.
Sahand is equipped with four powerful engines, which is more than the number of engines of Jamaran destroyer, and thus, is more advanced than Jamaran in terms of maneuvering performance.
Sahand is also capable of sailing on turbulent waters and distant oceans for 150 days while accompanied by a support vessel.
Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi said Sahand destroyer is capable of transporting anti-mine helicopters and is able to move to farther distances than Jamaran destroyer.
Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made great headways in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the arms sphere.
In recent years, Iran’s naval forces have increased their presence in international waters to secure naval routes and protect merchant vessels and oil tankers against pirates.
On Thursday, two Ghadir-class submarines capable of launching subsurface-to-surface missiles, torpedoes and mines joined Iran's naval fleet.
