Damascus (IP) - Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi at the head of a high economic-political delegation arrived at Damascus airport on Wednesday at the official invitation of the Syrian president for a two-day visit.

Iran PressMiddle East: President Raisi's visit is the first by an Iranian president to Damascus since the start of the civil war in Syria in 2011.

Raisi arrived in the Syrian capital Damascus on Wednesday morning while heading a high-ranking delegation of Iranian political and economic officials.

He is in Syria on an official invitation from President Bashar al-Assad.

Four government ministers including the Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran’s top banker and Raisi’s chief of staff, and his chief political advisor accompany him on the visit to Syria.

During this trip, President Raisi will explore ways to expand political, economic, and trade cooperation with the Arab country.

The president will also attend a joint meeting of Iranian and Syrian businessmen and is also expected to visit the religious sites of Syria.

During the 12-year crisis in Syria and the country's war with terrorists, the Islamic Republic of Iran provided support to the Syrian government against ISIS terrorists in the form of military advisors.

Syrian authorities, including Bashar al-Assad, have repeatedly appreciated Iran's support.

On Tuesday, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in an exclusive interview with Al-Mayadeen described his country’s relations with Syria as “strategic and deep”, stressing that his visit to Syria comes in the framework of consolidating these relations and developing them in all domains.
