Iran Press/Iran news: An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale struck the Iranian city of Dashtestan, in Bushehr Province on Friday.
According to the Seismological Center of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, this earthquake occurred at 05:23:11 a.m. local time (01:53 GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometers underground.
There were no immediate reports of damage, Iranian state television reported. “No reports have been received on any possible damage from the earthquake,” it said.
The quake was moderate, which can cause considerable damage, and was centered 53km (33 miles) east of Bushehr, a nuclear facility on Iran’s southern coast of the Persian Gulf.
The plant is designed to withstand much stronger earthquakes.
Iran sits on major seismic fault lines and is prone to near-daily earthquakes. In 2003, a 6.6-magnitude quake flattened the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people. Bam is in southern Kerman province and the city's historic citadel suffered damage as a result of the powerful quake.
