Iran Press/ Africa: According to reports by Arabic media outlets in Saudi Arabia, at least 68 police officers have been detained by the Transitional Military Council forces.
TMC which is supported by Saudi Arabia and UAE was created after the resignation of the country's long-term dictator, Omar al-Bashir to transfer power to a civilian transitional government.
TMC having no clear plans for the future of Sudan, and having broken all of its promises, was soon rejected by the majority of Sudanese, with protesters opposed to the TMC holding regular demonstrations.
After a couple of months, protests became a daily occurrence with Transitional Military Council ordered a crackdown on protesters, leading to more anger and resentment of the Sudanese people.
The coup attempt targeted the Transitional Military Council which was created after the resignation of the country's long-term leader, Omar Bashir, media reports noted.
Earlier this month, head of the Sudanese Transitional Military Council Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan called for a general election to be held within the next nine months a day after military forces attacked people and killed more than 100 protesters and injured thousands.
Sudan has been engulfed by protests since last December. The rallies were initially triggered by the rise in price for bread but later took on a new turn as Sudanese citizens began calling for the resignation of Bashir.
The situation escalated in early April when Bashir, who had been in power for nearly 30 years, was detained by the country's military. The Transitional Military Council promised to hold a new election in two years’ time.
However, protesters demanded the military hand over power to a new civilian government.
