Tehran(IP) - Iran's Government Spokesman said that Iranian mothers who married foreign men and subject to the law on granting Iranian citizenship to their children should go to the governorates from June 21 and start the legal process of obtaining citizenship for their children.

Iran Press/Iran NewsAli Rabiei made the remarks on Sunday at a joint meeting of the representatives of the bodies related to the implementation of the law on 'Granting Citizenship to Children of Iranian Women Married with Foreign Men', saying the process of granting the citizenship to the children of the Iranian mothers living in Iran will be implemented in the next three weeks, and these mothers can go to governorates.

Rabiei said the Islamic Republic of Iran's policies is not to differentiate but equality for all even foreign nationals in particular Afghan nationals.

Stating that in Iran, all the officials and intellectuals have always objected to discrimination and favoritism, he said: "At Iranian schools, no segregation has been applied, and we host many foreign national students at schools, universities."

"We are obliged morally to respect legal rights to foreign nationals equally with Iranian citizens especially during coronavirus outbreak," the official added.

Rabiei concluded that many foreign nationals consider Iran as their own homeland.

In line with its plans to protect the civil rights of Iranian women and their children, the government sent a bill to the parliament which was finally approved by the lawmakers on September 24, 2019. It required granting citizenship to children born to Iranian mothers and non-Iranian fathers.

Art. 976 of the Iranian Civil Code provides that only children born to Iranian fathers (not those born to Iranian mothers married to non-Iranian fathers) are granted Iranian citizenship.
