Beirut (IP) – Lebanon’s parliament speaker, Nabih Berri, on Wednesday called for the swift election of a new president while urging displaced residents to return to their homes, as a ceasefire following Israel’s war on Lebanon appeared to hold.

Iran Press/West Asia: "I invite you to return to your homes... return to your land," Berri said during a public address, emphasizing resilience despite the devastation caused by the Israeli aggression.

Acknowledging international support, Berri added, "Lebanon is still standing, and I thank the friendly countries that stood by Lebanon."

Lebanon has been without a president for over two years due to deep-seated political divisions, which have paralyzed governance and exacerbated the country’s economic and social crises. The speaker appealed for an end to the deadlock, stating, "The country must quickly elect a president."

Berri also called on the international community to take greater responsibility in aiding Lebanon’s recovery and fostering stability. "Today, all countries should shoulder responsibility towards Lebanon and its prosperity," he said, signaling the urgent need for sustained global support.
