Lebanon’s government condemned an Israeli drone strike in Sidon on Thursday that killed three civilians and injured five UN peacekeepers and three Lebanese soldiers, calling the attack a “war crime.”

Iran Press/West Asia: The strike marked an escalation in hostilities, with Lebanon's Foreign Ministry urging the international community to denounce and hold Israel accountable for its actions.

The incident occurred near a military checkpoint in southern Lebanon as a UNIFIL convoy was transporting newly arrived peacekeepers. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported that five of its peacekeepers sustained injuries in the attack. According to the Lebanese army, the Israeli drone targeted a civilian vehicle, killing three passengers and injuring soldiers stationed nearby.

Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry called the assault “an intensified act of aggression” that violates international humanitarian law, describing Israel’s repeated attacks on UNIFIL, Lebanese forces, and civilians as “systematic war crimes.” The ministry reiterated Lebanon’s commitment to supporting UNIFIL’s efforts in maintaining security and stability along Lebanon’s southern border and urged Israel to cease operations that risk regional peace.

The ongoing Israeli air campaign in Lebanon began in late September, with Israel claiming it targets Hezbollah forces along the border. The hostilities have intensified since the Gaza conflict began in October 2023, leading to significant civilian casualties. Lebanese health authorities report that more than 3,100 Lebanese civilians have been killed and over 13,800 wounded since the conflict reignited.

Moreover, in Gaza, the death toll due to Israeli military actions has escalated to an alarming 43,000 killed, most of them women and children, with over 100,000 individuals injured, as reported by recent UN figures.

The ongoing conflict has caused massive displacement, affecting nearly 1.9 million people. Health services are severely impacted, with only a fraction of facilities still operational, leading to critical shortages in medical aid and essentials.

This grave humanitarian crisis continues to grow, underscoring the urgent need for international attention and support to alleviate the suffering.

On October 1, Israel launched a ground incursion into southern Lebanon, further escalating the situation. Lebanese officials emphasized their commitment to UN Resolution 1701, which aims to maintain peace along the border, and called for the resolution’s full implementation to ensure the protection of Lebanese civilians, soldiers, and peacekeepers stationed in the region.
