Iran Press/Iran news: In an exclusive interview with Iran Press on Sunday, IAEO's spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi said: "Of course Iran is not sitting idly, Iran is active, we gave a 60-day window of opportunity to the Europeans to honour their commitments. The 60 days is up. We announced today we are reducing our commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) since the Europeans have not carried out their commitments. Based on what we have said before; we are increasing the level of uranium enrichment to above the 3.67 percent level. We are also rethinking the modernisation of the research heavy water reactor of Arak (Khandan). These are the two main issues. We have submitted the changed DIQ [Design Information Questionnaire] to the IAEA. Iran has submitted the two issues changing the DIQ."
In further remarks, Kamalvandi said: "The technical changes will bring it eventually above 3.67 level of enrichment. Of course, as far as the reactor is concerned we prefer the modernised reactor because it has a higher neutron flux making it more suitable for production of nuclear medicines (radioisotopes)."
The spokesman for Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI) urged the Europeans to cooperate with Iran by saying: "If they will not fulfil their commitments and do not help Iran specially in the procurement of the facilities and equipment then Iran will not have any choice but to go back again to the previous reactor and that is something as I have already mentioned technically and politically we are not at this stage willing to do so."
