Rome (IP)- The Italian Ministry of the Interior fired nearly 1300 employees of its immigration department on the eve of Christmas and new year celebrations.

Iran PressEurope: More than a hundred contract employees of the Italian Ministry of Interior gathered in front of the governor of Rome on behalf of their other dismissed colleagues in different cities of the country.

The fired employees did not go to work last Friday (December 23, 2022) with a nationwide strike.

One fired employee told Iran Press: "We are contract employees of the Ministry of Interior; the government has not found any way to renew our contracts, so none of us will be at work on December 31."

Stating that politicians should not misuse immigration, he added: "Immigration cases are not only an emergency but also a structural problem. The Ministry of Interior does not extend our contract to follow up on the cases of immigrants."

He also emphasized the rights of immigrants and asylum seekers in Italy. He said: "Without the presence of the employees of the immigration office, handling the cases of immigrants who have all the conditions for residence or asylum will face many problems."

Following the worsening economic crisis, unemployment, lack of job security, high cost of living, and energy, Italy has been facing widespread strikes and demonstrations in the last two months.
