The Irish Parliament has passed a motion urging the government to impose trade, travel, and diplomatic sanctions on Israel in response to alleged war crimes and genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

Iran PressEurope:  The motion calls on Ireland’s government to immediately suspend all military and arms dealings with Israel, make it illegal to export dual-use goods to Israel, and restrict Irish airspace and airports from aircraft carrying weapons to Tel Aviv.

This non-binding motion was approved by Irish lawmakers on Thursday, who described Israel as a "criminal regime" conducting genocidal actions "before the eyes of the world."

The move by the Irish Parliament aligns with prior remarks from Ireland's Foreign Minister, Micheál Martin, who recently announced Dublin’s intent to support South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). South Africa’s case, filed in late December 2023, accuses Israel of violating the 1948 Genocide Convention, alleging that its actions aim to eradicate a significant portion of Gaza's Palestinian population.

In response, Israel’s Foreign Ministry reportedly sent a confidential communication to its embassy and all U.S. consulates, instructing diplomats to seek support from U.S. Congress members. Israeli diplomats were encouraged to publicly condemn South Africa’s actions and warn that such legal maneuvers could strain trade relations between the U.S. and South Africa.

However, U.S. officials suggest that a disruption in trade is unlikely, as Washington aims to maintain strong ties with Pretoria to counter Russian and Chinese influence in the region.
