Iran Press/Europe: Russia appointed the president of the BRICS in January 2024, for one year. During the term, BRICS is supposed to hold more than 250 events in the Kazan, overseen by Moscow, which will cover a wide range of topics.

Earlier, Russian Minister of Justice Konstantin Chuychenko said that as the BRICS is getting expanded by its members, Russia plans to hold a special meeting of justice ministers of BRICS countries in 2024 in Kazan.

Meanwhile, a municipal delegation from Tehran, led by the Deputy Mayor for Urban Financial Affairs Lotfollah Forouzande, arrived in Moscow to participate in the meeting that will be held for the mayors of the BRICS member countries.

The mayor meeting will be held on Wednesday and Thursday.

The BRICS group, or emerging economies of the world, was initially formed with the presence of Russia, China, India, and Brazil, and then South Africa joined it. At the beginning of this year, Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, and Ethiopia joined the group.

BRICS: An Overview of Its Origins and Expansion

The acronym BRIC, representing Brazil, Russia, India, and China, was first introduced in 2001 by a Western analyst who, after studying the economic potential of developing nations, predicted that these four countries would shape global economic and political trends in the 21st century. The analyst foresaw the creation of what is now known as BRICS.

As described by Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian President, in a recent interview, the foreign ministers of Brazil, Russia, and China, along with India’s defense minister, held a special meeting in 2006 on the sidelines of the 61st UN General Assembly in New York to explore expanding cooperation in a four-nation framework.

In 2009, the first BRIC summit was held in Yekaterinburg, Russia, where the leaders of the four countries agreed in a joint statement to pursue coordinated, active, practical, and transparent cooperation, not only for the benefit of developing countries and emerging markets but also to promote a harmonious global order that guarantees sustainable and shared peace.South Africa joined the group in 2011, adding the letter "S" for South Africa to the acronym.

During the BRICS summit in South Africa in the summer of 2023, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the group's decision to invite Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE to become full members of BRICS. However, the newly elected president of Argentina later announced that his country would not join.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, whose country holds the rotating BRICS presidency, commented that Argentina’s invitation remains valid, adding that the group's expansion process continues and will see how Argentina decides in the future.

Russia, as the BRICS chair in 2024, has planned around 250 events within this framework, with the most significant being the BRICS summit, scheduled for October 2024 in Kazan, Russia. Among the new members, Saudi Arabia’s participation in BRICS events has been minimal. According to Konstantin Kosachev, Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Federation Council, Riyadh is still evaluating its involvement in the BRICS group.
