"I am glad to welcome and wish fruitful work to the participants of the BRICS Media Summit, which has commenced in Moscow. TASS partners from the Asia-Pacific and CIS countries are also participating. I hope that the BRICS Media Summit will serve as another step toward further strengthening relations between our countries and help establish both business and interpersonal connections," he said in a video message to attendees at a gala event celebrating the 120th anniversary of TASS, which included participants from the summit.
Putin also announced that a meeting of BRICS heads of state is scheduled to take place in Kazan in October. "I am confident that your efforts will ensure that this meeting receives appropriate media coverage," he added.
The BRICS Media Summit is being held in Moscow from September 13 to 17, bringing together leaders of major media outlets from BRICS member states and countries interested in joining the group. TASS is the organizer of the summit.
About BRICS
BRICS has undergone two waves of expansion since its inception in 2006. South Africa joined the original members—Brazil, Russia, India, and China—in 2011.
In August 2023, six additional countries—Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE—were invited to join. Although Argentina declined to join in late December, the remaining countries officially became full members on January 1, 2024.
The BRICS group now represents a significant portion of the global population and economy, accounting for approximately 46 percent of the world's population and about 30 percent of global GDP. The association aims to promote comprehensive cooperation among its members across various sectors, including economic, cultural, and scientific domains, while maintaining a non-bloc nature that is not directed against third parties.
