The Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations called on UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to take a stance against flouting of international law by the United States.

Iran Press/Iran news: During his farewell ceremony at the end of his tenure at the UN on Friday, Gholamali Khoshroo discussed main international and regional developments.

According to Iran Press, he urged secretary general Antonio Guterres to adopt a firm stance against US law-breaking and imposition of illegal unilateral sanctions on Iran.

Condemning US unilateral exit from the JCPOA and threatening member states for cooperating with Iran, he said that it is unprecedented to see a permanent member of the UN Security Council punish other members of the UN for abiding by UN security council resolution 2231, which unanimously endorsed the Iran nuclear deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan Of Action.

Global community should withstand the stubborn and unlawful measures, he said.

US President Donald Trump announced in May that Washington was walking away from the nuclear agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which lifted nuclear-related sanctions against Tehran in exchange for restrictions on Tehran's nuclear program.

The first round of American sanctions took effect in August, targeting Iran's access to the US dollar, metals trading, coal, industrial software, and auto sector.

The second round of sanctions, aimed at Iran's oil industry, came into effect on November 5.

Khoshroo also lambasted Saudi attacks on Yemen which have created a tragic humanitarian crisis, calling for an end to the devastating war and start of political compromise among the conflicting parties.

The UN chief, for his part, stressed the need for multilateralism against international challenges, hoping that Yemen war would end soon.

Saudi Arabia, with the support of the United States, the United Arab Emirates and several other countries, has engaged in military aggression against Yemen, imposing a total blockade, and carrying out naval and airstrikes since March 2015.

Nearly 14,000 Yemenis, including 5,000 women and children, have lost their lives in the deadly military campaign since March 2015.

At the beginning of the meeting, Khoshroo presented a hand-made Iranian tableau carpet featuring Guterres’ portrait to the UN secretary general.
