Iran Press/ Europe: Russia has launched “a special military operation” in Ukraine on Thursday. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin says he had no other choice than to launch the military operation to stop the Ukrainian military’s interference in two eastern republics that have broken away from Ukraine. Russia perceives NATO’s eastward expansion as a threat.
In the latest development, reports of gunfire in central Kyiv emerged Friday morning with Russian military forces entering the capital city, inching closer towards the government’s seat of power.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Siarto discussed the Ukraine crisis and cooperation in facilitating the return of Iranians living in Ukraine to our country.
In the telephone call, Amir-Abdollahian expressed concern over NATO’s previous actions in simmering a crisis in the Eastern European region and stressed the need to support political solutions to the Ukraine crisis.
On this basis, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran called for the humanitarian assistance of the Hungarian authorities to facilitate the transfer of Iranians residing in Ukraine through the territory of this country.
“Iranian citizens, including students, families of diplomats and other Iranians living in Ukraine, want to enter the Polish-Hungarian border to return to the country,” said Amir-Abdollahian, appreciating the Hungarian government’s efforts to assist and provide the necessary facilities to Iranians living in Ukraine to leave the country safely.
In this telephone call, the Hungarian Foreign Minister, for his part, stressed that his country will spare no effort to pursue the transfer of Iranian citizens through Hungarian territory and the necessary instructions to accept Iranians without a visa on Hungarian territory and provide immediate facilities for their return to our country.
The Hungarian Foreign Minister also expressed strong concern over the start of military operations, affirming the need to use political and diplomatic solutions, and hoped that the dimensions of the crisis would be managed and controlled as soon as possible.
Latest on situation of Iranians living in Ukraine
An Iranian student in Ukraine posted a video on cyberspace asking for the help of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to immediately transfer students and Iranians living in Kyiv to the country.
According to the Iran Press news agency, the Iranian student stated: “A large number of Iranians, especially students, are living in an old shelter waiting for the help of the officials of the Iranian embassy and foreign ministry to transfer them to a safe place.”
According to the Iranian student, the only way out of Ukraine is to go to the Polish border by land.
Iran Air awaits permission for returning Iranians from Ukraine
The Chairman of Iran Air Company says as soon as flight permissions from Kyiv are issued, the Iranian planes will get prepared to transfer the Iranians living in Ukraine to their country.
Mohammad Mohammadi-Bakhsh said in case the necessary permissions were not issued, the Iranian nationals could get the borders of Ukraine so that they could be transferred to Iran as soon as possible.
“Once the flight permissions are issued, we will be ready for flight operations in less than 2 or 3 hours,” he said.
