In a significant boost to cross-border trade, the Mahiroud border terminal in South Khorasan has transported nearly 506,000 tons of goods to Afghanistan since the start of the Iranian year 1403 (beginning March 2023).

Iran Press/Iran news: This marks an impressive 688% increase compared to the same period last year, according to South Khorasan’s Director General of Road Maintenance and Transportation, Asadollah Jalalzadeh.

Jalalzadeh reported on Tuesday that, to date, over 335,866 tons of goods have been exported from the Mahiroud terminal to Afghanistan. Key exports include herbal medicines, flour, oil, and spare parts, which are sourced from countries such as the UAE, Russia, China, and Indonesia, entering Iran and then continuing via Mahiroud to Afghanistan.

Additionally, South Khorasan officials noted significant vehicle traffic at Mahiroud, with 31,028 vehicles entering and 30,766 exiting the terminal within the last seven months alone.

The Mahiroud terminal, located in Sarbisheh County, has become an essential part of Iran’s broader economic strategy with Afghanistan. Jalalzadeh emphasized that the province’s Road Maintenance and Transportation Directorate is actively working to improve infrastructure at the Mahiroud terminal, aiming to expand economic ties and facilitate greater exports to Afghanistan.

South Khorasan province, which shares a 331-kilometer border with Afghanistan, operates four border markets across the counties of Sarbisheh, Nehbandan, Darmiand, and Zirkouh. Of these, Mahiroud has been the most active in recent years, ranking as Iran's third official entry point with Afghanistan alongside the Dogharoon border in Razavi Khorasan and the Milak border in Sistan-Baluchestan.
