(IP)- The presidents of Iran and Brazil emphasized the expansion of bilateral cooperation on the sidelines of the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg.

Iran PressAfrica: The President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, traveled to South Africa on Wednesday evening at the head of a delegation to attend BRICS member states at the invitation of the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa.

The President of the Islamic Republic of Iran participated and spoke at the 15th BRICS Summit, to which the leaders of 70 countries were invited; he also held talks with some of the leaders of the countries present at the summit.

Raisi also met the President of Brazil, Lula da Silva, and expressed his satisfaction with the Brazilian President's re-election to the country's presidency and emphasized bolstering ties between Iran and Brazil.

Pointing to the failure of the maximum-pressure policy of the United States, admitted by American officials, the Iranian President added that despite the imposed sanctions on the country, Iran's progress in science and technology is a leap forward.

Brazilian President Lula da Silva congratulated Iran's membership in the BRICS group. He said: "There are many opportunities in scientific, technology, academic, and cultural issues to expand cooperation and relations between the two countries."

Brazilian President considered sanctions a "weapon that targets the people of that country."

Da Silva labeled the current structure of the United Nations "incapable of preventing the encroachment of powers against the rights of nations," stressing the redesigning of the existing systems.

He stated that BRICS must be able to establish a new economic logic and order in the world.
