Iran Press/ Iran News: The Iranian Vice President for International and Legal Affairs presented a report on the status quo of Iran's attachment to the Paris Agreement, on Friday.
Mohammad Dehghan said that Iran has already joined the Tokyo Agreement and the previous agreements on climate, but in case of the Paris Agreement, the US and Europe's sanctions are the most important reasons that have prevented Tehran from joining the treaty.
Dehghan said that joining such an agreement requires importing the necessary equipment to the country which is itself tied to the lifting of the sanctions on Iran so that the country could have financial transactions with the world.
He added: "We have fulfilled our commitments to environmental treaties more than our obligations without the need for this treaty, though."
The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change. It was adopted by 196 parties at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris, France, on 12 December 2015. It entered into force on 4 November 2016. The US withdrew from the international treaty on November 4, 2020, , but rejoined it on January 20, 2021. By January 2021, 195 countries had signed and 190 countries had ratified the agreement.
