Iran Press/ Europe: German police say they have ended a hostage situation in the eastern city of Dresden, following reports of shots fired Saturday morning.
German police have ended an hours-long hostage situation after an armed man killed his mother and stormed a Dresden shopping mall today.
Saxony State Police this morning shut down Altmarkt-Galerie, one of the most popular shopping malls in Dresden, and the Striezelmarkt Christmas market.
In a Twitter statement posted at 11:30 am, police said negotiators were in contact with the hostage-taker.
Members of the force’s tactical unit, the Spezialeinsatzkommando, or Special Task Force, had also been sent to the scene.
Less than 15 minutes later, the force said: ‘All clear! The hostage situation in Dresden is over!
Shortly after noon, police announced on Twitter that the hostage situation was over. “Two outwardly uninjured people are in our care,” they added. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the suspect had been arrested.
Earlier, Radio Dresden reported a gunman had tried to enter the building where the broadcaster was based, near the city's main train station.
The man reportedly fired several shots before fleeing, according to the radio station.
Dresden police separately confirmed that a 62-year-old woman was found dead in another part of the city on Saturday.
Her 40-year-old son was named as a suspect.
Police declined to confirm whether there was a connection between the killing and the hostage-taking.
