UNSC meeting on JCPOA kicks off

Tehran (IP) - A United Nations Security Council meeting to review the 13th United Nations Secretary-General's report on the implementation of Resolution 2231 and the Joint Plan of Action Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action kicked off Thursday.

Iran PressAmerica: Diplomatic efforts to reach a comprehensive, long-term and proper solution to the Iranian nuclear issue culminated in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)  concluded on 14 July 2015 by China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States, the High Representative of the European Union (the E3/EU+3) and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

On 20 July 2015, the Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 2231 endorsing the JCPOA

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in his report on the implementation of Security Council res solution 2231, called on the United States to lift sanctions against Iran.

In the report like previous versions, Guterres called JCPOA, the best available option to achieve non-proliferation and regional security."

The UN chief also warned against further delays and the lack of progress in diplomatic engagements to put the JCPOA back on track, urging Iran and the US to demonstrate more flexibility to reach a compromise on outstanding issues.

"I again call upon the United States to also lift or waive its sanctions as outlined in the Plan and to extend the waivers with regard to the trade-in oil with the Islamic Republic of Iran," Guterres said, also calling on Iran to return to full implementation of the JCPOA.

Today, two intense days of talks on lifting the sanctions ended in Doha, the capital of Qatar. Iran and the US held two days of indirect negotiations coordinated by the European Union in Doha. 

The two sides reviewed the latest developments in the current Doha talk for lifting the sanctions.

Iran's top diplomat Hossein Amirabdollahian said that Iran is serious about reaching a good, strong, and lasting agreement, and if the US is realistic, getting a deal is possible.
