Depression prevails dangerously among the residents of Gaza because of the siege, poverty and unemployment.

 

 

The 11th years of Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip has increased the psychological and social diseases for many citizens as a result of unemployment, lack of  suitable jobs and economic depression.

 

Social and economic experts warned of the serious repercussions of the deterioration of the political, economic and social conditions on the psychological situation of the residents of Gaza Strip.

 

"The situation in Gaza has left catastrophic circumstances for citizens under a siege imposed on Gaza for 11 years," said Salah Abed Al-Atati, chairman of the International Organization for the Support of the Rights of Palestinians.

 

He accentuated that the increasing rates of poverty and unemployment as well as launching wars on Gaza Strip,  thousands of Palestinians martyred and wounded, has led to prejudice human rights such as despair and frustration, and social diseases such as divorce and suicide.

 

Abed Al-Atati confirmed on the necessity for a  real intervention to stop the deterioration and treat the causes of the crisis, especially external one, particularly the siege and strife.

 

Recent Palestinian statistics show that there is obvious rise in the number of adults suffering from depression and disorder as a result of poor living conditions and increasing of poverty and unemployment.

 

"22% of people during 2017 are depressed, while 26% of people suffer from anxiety. In addition,  21% of them have disorders due to the use of drugs." said Gaza Community Mental Health Program.

 

The economic expert Mo'in Abu Rajab said that unemployment rates in Gaza Strip reached 47%. He continued "Almost half of the workforce in Gaza Strip is disabled, which means that the situation in Gaza strip is not normal."

 

He said: "The sanctions imposed by the Palestinian Authority on Gaza Strip, and the threat of suspension of work of the International Relief Agency" UNRWA", through the intimidation of donors, Palestinians and refugees, are factors have led to increasing proportions of unrest among the citizens of Gaza."

 

He continued, "The highest unemployment rate in the world is in Gaza Strip. He wondered, "The youth who can not gain their aliment for one day, what will we anticipate from them?.
