Tehran (IP) - Top EU diplomat and foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, has arrived in Tehran to meet senior Iranian officials, aiming to reduce tensions over the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and discussing mutual relations.

Iran PressIran news: Top EU diplomat Josep Borrell arrived in Tehran on Monday on his first trip to the Islamic Republic since taking office. Borrell is due to meet President Hassan Rouhani, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and parliamentary speaker Ali Larijani during his two-day trip, Iran Press reported.

Europe says it wants to save the Iran nuclear deal, JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action)  and Borell's trip to Tehran is aimed at reducing rising tensions over the Iran nuclear program.

The 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and a group of world powers has been crumbling since United States President Donald Trump withdrew from the agreement (JCPOA) in May 2018.

Washington has since stepped up sanctions and a campaign of "maximum pressure" against Tehran.

Iran has gradually pulled back from its own commitments under the deal, while military tensions with the US have brought the two countries to the brink of confrontation in recent weeks.

The senior Spanish diplomat Josep Borrell, who headed the European Parliament in 2004-2005 and Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2018-2019, succeeded Federica Mogherini as the EU foreign policy chief this autumn and has been active in office since November 2019.
