Tehran (IP)- Iran's permanent ambassador to the UN said in a statement that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action can only be restored by addressing the root causes of its current situation.

Iran PressAmerica: Amir Saeed Iravani remarked while addressing a Monday session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on the JCPOA and the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2231, which upholds the deal.

He said: "Obviously, the JCPOA can only be restored by addressing the root causes of its current situation, that is the US withdrawal therefrom on 8 May 2018."

Since then, the United States has re-imposed all its harsh and inhumane sanctions against Iran, violating its explicit legal obligations under Resolution 2231(2015). Furthermore, it pursued its so-called "maximum pressure" policy against the Iranian people. The aim was to "starve" the Iranian people, as stated openly and shamelessly by the former US Secretary of State. The US has weaponized economic sanctions in its longstanding hostile policy against the Iranian people.

Furthermore, as a permanent member of this Council, the United States brazenly forced all other UN Member States to violate Resolution 2231 or face punishment. This is unprecedented in the history of the United Nations.

Despite the change in the US administration in 2021, the country's maximum pressure policy has remained unchanged. Even though consistently admitting the policy's failure, the current administration continues to implement it more extensively and harshly. It should also be noted that the E3 continues to support and enforce such US sanctions and policies fully. Like the United States, they fail to meet their obligations under the JCPOA.

At the same time, Iravani stressed that reaching an agreement would only be possible if the United States showed its political will and agreed to fulfill its obligations.
