Medina, a city in western Saudi Arabia, with a population close to one-and-a-half million, is currently hosting Hajj pilgrims from various Islamic countries.

According to an Iran Press report, pilgrims from all over the world are converging on the historic city of Medina, to visit the "Masjid al-Nabi", the Holy prophet's mosque , and other important religious and historic sites in the city, such as the "Qoba Mosque"  and the "Qiblatein Mosque".

The old name for Medina is Yathrib.  The city was called Yathrib until the middle of seventeenth century, when its name was changed to Medinat-al-Nabi , literally 'the city of the Prophet'.  Prophet Mohammad and some of his companions emigrated from Mecca, and arrived in Medina, a key journey which became the starting point for Islamic lunar and solar calendars.

Pilgrims in Medina also visit the "Qoba Mosque", which is   another  most famous religious landmark of Islam.  Some regard this mosque as the oldest  mosque in the world.

The 'Qiblatein Mosque' , or the mosque of the two Qiblas, is another historic religious site visited by the pilgrims.  'Qibla' is the direction of prayer.
