Nigeria (IP) — More than 30 people sustained various degrees of injuries and two pregnant women were forced to give birth during a stampede that occurred at the distribution of almsgiving in Bauchi State, Northwestern Nigeria on Sunday.

Iran Press/Africa: The incident took place as prominent Nigerian businessman Alhaji Yakubu Maishanu Shafa, also known as AYM Shafa, was distributing ten thousand Naira to each person.

Following the tragic event at AYM Shafa's office in Bauchi city, poor women were seen waiting anxiously at a nearby filling station, hoping for the money distribution to resume after being halted due to the deadly stampede that claimed multiple lives.

Thousands of impoverished individuals, predominantly women, had gathered at the office to receive financial assistance. The Nigeria Police Force was present to maintain order.

Eyewitness Ummu Ahmad recounted the chaos that unfolded, stating that everything was proceeding smoothly until a gate was opened and a rush ensued. As people attempted to enter the premises to collect their money, tensions rose and police intervention led to panic and ultimately a stampede resulting in casualties.

Hajiya Jamila described seeing four dead bodies and seven others who had fainted during the chaos. She expressed gratitude for narrowly escaping harm herself.

Adama Muhammad alleged that tear gas fired by police officers triggered the stampede as desperate individuals tried to flee for safety.

Zainab Idris shared heartbreaking news of her relatives' involvement in the tragedy, including two pregnant women who were forced into premature labor. Victims were promptly transported to a local hospital for urgent medical attention.

Abbas Abdullahi, who assisted in transporting casualties to the hospital, recounted retrieving five deceased individuals from the scene. He estimated that more than ten people had lost their lives, all of whom were women.

At Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital Bauchi, medical personnel confirmed receiving seven deceased individuals along with numerous injured patients. Efforts were made to identify and notify families of those who perished in the stampede.

The removal of fuel subsidies by President Bola Ahmad Tinubu on May 29th, 2023 coupled with Naira devaluation has exacerbated poverty levels among Nigerians. Inflation rates have soared while food prices continue to skyrocket, plunging many into dire circumstances.

In a heart-wrenching account, Saudat Musa shared her anguish over her daughter Fatima Yunusa's critical condition following the tragic incident. The community mourns the loss of those who perished in pursuit of much-needed financial assistance amidst economic turmoil.
