Tehran (IP) - Surveys show that Iran's popularity has increased in Armenia even more after Tehran announced the preservation of international borders in the Caucasus as its red line in the recent conflicts on Nagorno-Karabakh.

Iran PressAsia: Recent deadly clashes in Azerbaijan -Armenia border originated in the conflicts in the late 1980s when both sides were under Soviet rule, and Armenian forces captured swathes of territory near Nagorno-Karabakh — long recognized internationally as Azerbaijan's territory, but with a large Armenian population.

In 2020, Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan clashed for the second time over the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. After 44 days, the war ended with Russian mediation and the signing of three so-called tripartite declarations.

At the time, Iran, on the conflicts of its neighbors over its borders, voiced support for the Nagorno-Karabakh competition through dialogue and stressed that it would not tolerate any foreign troops present over its borders.

Speaking in a meeting on Iran-Armenia relations which was held on Tuesday in the Caucasus Studies Foundation in Tehran, Armenian researcher 'Zhanna Vardanian' said the level of political relations between Tehran and Yerevan is very well, and economic ties between the two countries still have a lot of potential for development.

Vardanian added: "Early next year, Iran's commercial center will be opened in Armenia, and it is very good that the joint information center of the two countries will also start working at the same time."

The Armenian researcher also noted that Armenia is building a north-south transit road, and probably Iranian companies will also participate in its construction. With the completion of the road, the logistical issues of trade with the EU will be solved.

Vardanian said: In the cease-fire agreement on November 9, 2020, which occurred between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia, Russian peacekeepers should be stationed in Lachin Corridor, and there will be no presence of foreign troops in the Zangezur Corridor.
