Iran emphasizes on security, stability in Afghanistan

Tehran (IP) - For more than four decades, the Islamic Republic of Iran has supported refugees, foreign nationals, and immigrants, mostly from neighboring Afghanistan, and provided them with the same services as Iranian citizens, without discrimination.

Iran PressIran news: The current conflict in Afghanistan will definitely have negative consequences for the future of the country. One of the consequences is the displacement of more people.

Although in recent years, many efforts have been made by the government of Afghanistan and host countries of Afghan refugees, especially Iran, to encourage refugees to return to their country, most of the refugees say that the time and situation is nor proper for them to return to their country.

In such a situation, with the escalation of insecurity, it seems that we are witnessing a new wave of migration from Afghanistan to other countries.

Reports from the United Nations, the Human Rights Commission, and the Afghan Refugee Agency show that the flow of migrants to neighboring countries is increasing as the conflict intensifies.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), people have been forced to flee their homes and villages due to war and violence. About 60% of these migrants are children and teenagers under 18 years of age.

According to the Afghan Minister of Refugees, Noor Rahman Akhlaqi, there are currently 2.5 million Afghan citizens legally or illegally in Iran.

Iran’s behavior with Afghan refugees outstanding

Rising insecurity and violence in Afghanistan, the displacement of millions at home and abroad, and the devastation caused by the war have been the results of the occupation and 20 years of US military presence.

Majid Takht-Ravanchi, Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations, said at a rec  Security Council meeting on Afghanistan, referring to the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country: "With the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban have no justification for using force. Therefore, they must stop the violence and show that they want to interact with their compatriots using the power of logic instead of the logic of force, and seize this unprecedented opportunity through political means to sincerely contribute to establishing lasting peace in Afghanistan."

Takht-Ravanchi noted that by hosting millions of Afghan refugees and connecting the country to the high seas through the port of Chabahar and to Europe via the Khaf-Herat railway, Iran has proved that it stands by the government and people of Afghanistan to build a secure, stable, democratic and prosperous country and will continue to work together.

In the current situation, unfortunately, the outbreak of the coronavirus has increased the problems of refugees. Naturally, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the host governments will face greater challenges in providing healthcare.

Although increasing refugee needs and inhumane sanctions against Iran have made refugee protection more difficult, the Islamic Republic of Iran will not give up any assistance to provide refugees' services. However, the future of millions of refugees depends on the successful outcome of the peace talks and the international community's commitment to helping stabilize and secure and rebuild Afghanistan's economic and livelihood infrastructure.

The Islamic Republic of Iran recognizes peace and security in Afghanistan as the peace and security of Iran, and with this approach supports the peace process and the advancement of inter-Afghan dialogue.
