Reuters reported the former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22-1/2 years in prison on Friday for the murder of George Floyd during an arrest in May 2020, video of which galvanized a national protest movement against racism.

The ex-officer was on trial for murder and has denied the charges against him.

The footage of Chauvin, who is white, with his knee on the African-American Floyd's neck sparked global protests against racism.

George Floyd died at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer. The video of Floyd pleading with the officer, who pressed a knee into Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes until Floyd stopped moving, sparked widespread outrage and mass protests across the US and other parts of the world.
