Damascus (IP): The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in a meeting with his Syrian counterpart, emphasized that Iran would support the Syrian government and people against extremism and terrorism.

Iran Press/Middle East: Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad in Damascus on Wednesday to continue his meeting with Syrian officials.

During the meeting, the Iranian Foreign Minister expressed his satisfaction with his visit to Syria on the eve of the Syrian presidential election, especially in a situation where the Zionist regime is vulnerable to the resistance of the Palestinian people.

He emphasized the ominous phenomenon of extremism and terrorism.

Zarif also expressed satisfaction with the Syrian government's success in resisting US economic terrorism in imposing sanctions on Syria, adding: "Terrorism has spread to the medical field today, depriving the people of Iran and Syria of vaccines."

Cooperation in the economic and cultural fields and the pursuit of the opening of Iranian consulates in the cities of Aleppo and subsequently Latakia in Syria, with the consent of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, were among other issues raised by Zarif during the meeting.

The Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad also thanked the Islamic Republic of Iran for its support to the Syrian people and government and stressed the need for cooperation between the two countries in international and regional organizations.
