Why it matters:
Following last week's visit by Mohammad Eslami, Vice President and Head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, to Russia, two cooperation documents regarding small modular reactors (SMRs) and Hormoz nuclear power plant projects, with the capacity of 1250 MW reactors valued at over 25 billion dollars, were signed. These projects have a special strategic and economic significance within bilateral cooperation.

A delegation from Rosatom met on Wednesday with a group of Iranian officials from the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, discussing and exchanging views on small-scale reactors and 1250-megawatt power plant reactors. The new agreements pave the way for further expansion of cooperation, especially in the design and construction of advanced reactors, more than ever before.
According to this agreement, the two countries will have extensive and long-term cooperation in strategic areas. Article 23 of this agreement specifically pertains to cooperation in the field of nuclear reactors. Based on this article, the two countries, relying on their strategic relations, will pursue a comprehensive program for the development of nuclear technologies and the peaceful use of atomic energy.

During this visit, Nikolay Spassky and the Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Mohammad Eslami, talked about ongoing nuclear cooperation, emphasized the need to accelerate the implementation of joint projects.
It was also agreed that Alexey Likhachev, CEO of Rosatom, will travel to Iran in the near future to follow up on the agreed matters and to closely monitor the progress in the construction of Units 2 and 3 of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.
In recent days, the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Russian Federation has become operational following its approval by the Russian State Duma.
