Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has appointed former parliament speaker Ali Larijani as his representative to the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), restoring the veteran conservative to a position he once held nearly two decades ago.

Why it matters:

Larijani’s appointment signals his central role in shaping Iran’s national security policy at a time of regional volatility.

The big picture:

Ayatollah Khamenei's endorsement comes a day after President Masoud Pezeshkian named Larijani as the new secretary of the SNSC, replacing Ali Akbar Ahmadian.

What he's saying:

In his official message, Ayatollah Khamenei cited the reassignment of Ahmadian to “key executive responsibilities” as the reason for the change:

“Based on Article 176 of the Constitution, I appoint Dr. Ali Larijani as the Leader’s representative to the Supreme National Security Council. I thank Mr. Ahmadian for his years of successful service.”

Who is Larijani:

A veteran political figure, Larijani previously served as SNSC secretary from 2005–2007.

He was Iran’s parliament speaker for three consecutive terms (2008–2020).

Currently serves as a senior adviser to the Leader, a member of the Expediency Council, and the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution.

Briefly served as Minister of Culture during Rafsanjani’s first term.
