The Trump administration has formally requested the United Nations to dismiss Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, following her report stating major U.S. companies are involved in Israel’s war on Gaza.

Why it matters:

It shows Washington’s efforts to shield American corporations from international scrutiny and discredit UN reports critical of Israeli aggressions.

The big picture:

Albanese’s report shows that over 60 U.S. companies—including Lockheed Martin, Caterpillar, Microsoft, and Amazon—are profiting from Israel’s “genocidal campaign” in Gaza. The U.S. accused Albanese of “virulent antisemitism” and “support for terrorism”, and claimed she falsely presents herself as an international lawyer.

The Trump administration’s letter to the UN Secretary-General also described her actions as “political and economic warfare” against the global economy.

Context:

U.S. and Israel have withdrawn from the UN Human Rights Council. The U.S.-backed Israeli war on Gaza has so-far claimed more that 55,000 Palestinian lives and injured more than 100,000 oters. People in Gaza are sufering from strvation.
