Following Israeli strikes, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei appointed new military chiefs to key posts, emphasizing continuity, deterrence, and spiritual strength within Iran’s Armed Forces.

Why it matters:

The appointments mark a rapid reorganization at the highest levels of Iran’s military in the face of new military developments in the region. The new appointments are a sign of stability and resolve as Iran braces for further regional escalation.

Key points:

In formal decrees issued on June 13, Ayatollah Khamenei appointed successors with elevated ranks and strategic missions for Lt. Gen. Mohammad Hossein Bagheri, Lt. Gen. Gholam Ali Rashid, and Lt. Gen. Hossein Salami, all martyred in Israeli attacks.

Lt. Gen. Abdolrahim Mousavi

Appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces

“Considering the proud martyrdom of Lt. Gen. Mohammad Hossein Bagheri at the hands of the accursed Zionist regime, and considering your commendable service and valuable experience, I hereby appoint you as Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces,” the leader said in a statement.

“With reliance on Divine grace, a revolutionary approach is expected to enhance the defense and security readiness of the Armed Forces and Basij, enabling timely and effective responses to all levels and types of threats to the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Lt. Gen. Ali Shadmani

Appointed Commander of Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters

“Following the honorable martyrdom of Lt. Gen. Gholam Ali Rashid, and in recognition of your merit and experience, I appoint you, with promotion to the rank of lieutenant general, as Commander of Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters.”

“Strategic and operational planning against threats, along with precise assessments of combat readiness and enhanced synergy with the General Staff, are expected of you.”

Lt. Gen. Mohammad Pakpour

Appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC)

“Following the noble martyrdom of Lt. Gen. Hossein Salami, and given your qualifications and valuable experience, I appoint you, with promotion to the rank of lieutenant general, as Commander-in-Chief of the IRGC.”

Continuous advancement aligned with evolving needs, comprehensive readiness across all sectors, and cultivation of the IRGC’s core virtues, piety, and insight, are expected. The IRGC’s cultural, spiritual, and professional excellence must be strengthened as it advances toward its mission of perfection.

In all three decrees, issued on the eve of Eid al-Ghadir, Ayatollah Khamenei prayed for “the elevation of these sincere and devoted martyrs to the highest ranks and their companionship with the saints of God, especially Imam Ali (AS),” and wished divine success for their successors and fellow servicemen.
