Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, dismissed claims by some members of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC) regarding the Iranian islands of Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Bu Musa, calling the claims baseless and a violation of international law.

Why it matters:

The dispute over the three Persian Gulf islands get occasialy controversial, particularly with the UAE claiming sovereignty over the Persian islands. The PGCC’s repeated claims violate Iran’s territorial integrity.

The Big Picture:

The PGCC, after its 64th ministerial meeting, repeated its claims on disputed islands. Iran has time and again strongly rejected these claims, asserting the islands as an integral part of its territory and accusing the PGCC of interference. The ilans, even as their aincient Persian names indiacted, are Iran-specific lands.

What he's saying:

Esmaeil Baghaei: “The islands of Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Bu Musa are an inalienable part of Iran’s territory. The PGCC’s baseless claims violate international principles of national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Also, on the Arash gas field, Baghaei added: “Iran has consistently advocated for constructive cooperation with Kuwait, including joint exploitation of the Arash field’s hydrocarbon resources, based on mutual interests.”
