China said US not authorized to invite Security Council to trigger mechanism

China's representative to the United Nations has said that since the US has withdrawn from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and is not a signatory of the agreement, it has no authority to invite the Security Council to use the 'trigger mechanism'.

Iran PressEurope: China's representative to the UN in a message on Twitter on Friday wrote that the US request to the Security Council did not include the declaration specified in Security Council Resolution 2231 and could not request a snapback mechanism.

Nearly a year after withdrawing from the UN Security Council, the US government has claimed that it is still a party to the agreement and can use the snapback mechanisms contained in this agreement and Resolution 2231 against Iran.

According to current and former US experts and officials, the US suffered a disastrous defeat when only the Dominican Republic voted in favor of it’s a four-article resolution to the Security Council submitted last Friday.

Following that, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday formally requested the return of sanctions against Iran based snapback mechanisms.      221/207
