IP - Conditions are worsening for hundreds of patients and thousands of others sheltering in Al-Shifa, which has become a flashpoint in the war that has raged for more than five weeks as Israel's relentless and indiscriminate bombardment of the Palestinian territory persists.

Iran PressWest Asia: Israeli forces reached the gates of Gaza City's main hospital on Monday, the primary target in their battle to seize control of the northern half of the Gaza Strip, where medics said patients including newborn babies were dying for lack of fuel.

Six premature babies and nine patients have died since electrical shortages began affecting al-Shifa Hospital several days ago, Gaza’s health ministry says.

Gaza’s two largest hospitals, al-Shifa and al-Quds, have both closed. Israeli snipers continue to fire at anyone near al-Shifa Hospital, trapping thousands inside.

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees says Israel’s navy struck one of its facilities in southern Gaza despite sharing coordinates with warring parties.

Some 100 bodies are decomposing in the courtyard of the Al-Shifa hospital.

There was also fresh concern that the war could spread beyond Gaza, with an upsurge of clashes on Israel's northern border with Lebanon, and the United States launching air strikes on Syria.

Israel has targeted key infrastructure such as residential buildings, schools, and hospitals since its military onslaught on Gaza began on 7 October.

Since then thousands of Gazans have been killed and more than half of the population made homeless by a relentless Israeli military campaign. Israel has ordered the total evacuation of the northern half of Gaza. Gaza medical authorities say more than 11,000 people have been confirmed killed, around 40% of them children.
