Iranian representative in the UNSC, Majid Takht-Ravanchi

Iran's ambassador to the UN Security Council has said US military presence in the Persian Gulf and the flow of American weaponry into the region are the main causes of instability and insecurity in the Middle East.

Iran Press/America:  Iran’s representative at the UN Security Council, Majid Takht-Ravanchi in the UNSC meeting held on 20 August pointed out the “Iranophobic” statements of US officials to justify their policy in the region, adding: "Iran will vigorously exercise its inherent right to self-defence".

The Iranian ambassador to the United Nations warned: “While we are not seeking confrontation, we cannot and will not remain indifferent to the violation of our sovereignty,” Iran Press reported.

Iran remains determined to continue ensuring the safety and security of maritime navigation in this area, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, he added, underlining that the littoral States are responsible for the security of the Persian Gulf.

US Economic Terrorism against Iran

"The US has also interfered in Iran, including its support for several coup attempts and by perpetrating economic terrorism targeting ordinary and vulnerable Iranians," Takht-Ravanchi added.

Iran’s envoy in the UNSC said: "The United States is responsible for prolonging the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and its involvement in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen has contributed to support for terrorist groups."

Takht-Ravanchi said the US military presence in the Persian Gulf is one of the main causes of instability and insecurity in the Middle East, said another destabilizing factor is the unbridled flow of American weaponry into the region.  “We should not lose sight of the destabilizing nature and impact of the ‘divide-and-rule’ strategy of the United States,” he cautioned.

Takht-Ravanchi went to say that the United States is responsible for prolonging the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen and has contributed to supporting terrorist groups.

The Iranian ambassador to the UN also said that Israel’s unlawful occupation of Palestine is the main cause of conflict in the Middle East.  “The land of Palestine is not up for sale, and the aspirations, honour and dignity, and inalienable rights of an entire nation cannot be bought,” he added.

The US claims, baseless and without support

Failing to draw support from other UNSC members, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed that Iran continues to escalate tensions in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen.

While the US is the only country to have withdrawn from the Iran nuclear agreement, Pompeo said: "Tehran defied its nuclear commitments."

Germany Supports JCPOA

State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, Andreas Michaels, in his turn emphasized the critical role of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and asked for political dialogue if it could help in dealing constructively with Iran. He said that unilateral actions would do the opposite.

China supports a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons

Ma Zhaoxu, China's envoy to the meeting said efforts should be made to implement and abide by the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which remains critical to preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, he said, underlining that China supports a Middle East free from nuclear weapons.

The UK supports Iran’s right to self-defense

Karen Pierce UK's ambassador to the UN Security Council meeting suggested an exploratory look at the recent incident in the Strait of Hormuz, to launch regional dialogue saying that the United Kingdom supports Iran’s right to self-defence.

France offer for full adherence to all of JCPOA provisions

Anne Gueguen, the French ambassador expressed regret at the withdrawal of the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), emphasising the importance of full adherence and full implementation of all JCPOA provisions.

Russia to the US: Cooperation in the Persian Gulf or coalition against Iran?

Dmitry A Polyanskiy, Russian Federation envoy referred to the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's  words which often carried a negative connotation, and only once did the word “cooperation”  appearing in Pompeo's speech – and then only in the context of a coalition against Iran.

Polyanskiy added: “You spoke in an emotionally charged way about the Persian Gulf.”  Expressing concern that the United States continues to portray Iran as the main source of all problems, he said tensions in the Persian Gulf are largely fermented and stoked artificially.  101/211/205
