British Foreign Office minister Alan Duncan resigns

In Britain, foreign office minister Alan Duncan has resigned ahead of Boris Johnson's likely election as Britain's next prime minister.

Iran Press/ Europe:  A prominent minister has quit the British government rather than serve under Boris Johnson's leadership, warning that Brexit had cast a "dark cloud" over the country.

Alan Duncan resigned from the foreign office ahead of the announcement of the new prime minister on Tuesday as speculation mounted over an exodus of pro-EU ministers, according to a report by The Independent.

It comes ahead of a momentous week in Westminster, with the Conservative leadership contest to close on Monday.

The Liberal Democrats are also expected to announce their new leader on Monday, while Labour is braced for a series of fresh clashes over antisemitism.

Meanwhile, the former Labour chancellor of the exchequer and prime minister, Gordon Brown, has accused Boris Johnson of preparing to push the British economy "off a cliff" with his determination to deliver Brexit by the end of October, "do or die".

Ahead of Mr Johnson's expected election on Tuesday as Tory leader, the former Labour prime minister said a no-deal break with the EU would be a "self-inflicted wound" comparable in military terms to the Charge of the Light Brigade.

In a speech to the Hope Not Hate campaign in London, Gordon Brown warned the Brexiteers were in danger of descending into a brand of "paranoid nationalism" which risked breaking up the United Kingdom.
