Iran Press/ Iran news: The father of transfusion medicine, Karl Landsteiner, a Nobel Prize winner in Physiology and an American biologist, physician, and immunologist, distinguished the main blood groups in 1900. Each year on June 14, the anniversary of Landsteiner's birth date is celebrated as World Blood Donor Day.
In an interview with IranPress correspondence, Nasser Moghadam, Head of Education and Research of the General Administration of Blood Transfusion of East Azerbaijan Province emphasized that blood products and public participation pave the way for medical advances. More than 118 million units of blood are donated annually worldwide. Iran is among the 21 countries donating blood in the Eastern Mediterranean region according to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO). Moghadam noted that Iran is at the top in blood donation with more than 2.2 million units in the Eastern Mediterranean region while the total blood donation of countries in this region is 9.9 million units.
Donors shared with IranPress correspondence that donating blood not only helps their own health but also saves the lives of patients who need it. The need for blood products in surgeries, accidents, and treatment of diseases cannot be overstated as highlighted by one nurse at Tabriz Blood Transfusion Center.
While Iranians have always been pioneers in donating blood, there is still a need for maximum participation from people to ensure a full supply of blood and save thousands of lives. On this World Blood Donor Day, let us remember that donating blood can be a life-saving act for someone in need.
