Iran Press/ Africa: In a press release on May 2, 2023, the Ghana Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that 74 Ghanaians arrived safely at the Kotoka International Airport on Tuesday.
“Upon their arrival they were received by the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, Ghana’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union Commission (AU), Ambassador Amma A. Twum-Amoah, and other officials from the Ministry as well as some members of the Ghana Psychological Association,” parts of the statement read.
The Ministry indicated that the remaining six Ghanaians were evacuated through the Egyptian border post of Wadi Halfa.
“This brings to a total of eighty (80) Ghanaian nationals who have been evacuated safely from Sudan.”
The evacuation follows a week of deadly conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which has led to hundreds of victims and casualties and has cut the capital, Khartoum, and other parts of Sudan from humanitarian support.
According to the UN, more than 100,000 people have fled Sudan since heavy fighting broke out between rival forces on 15 April.
A further 334,000 people have been displaced within Sudan.
Officials warned of a “full-blown catastrophe” if fighting does not end.
Meanwhile, the Foreign Affairs Ministry commended other sides to make the evacuation possible and called on other Ghanaians still in Sudan to reach out to officials for assistance and subsequent evacuation.
