Saravan (IP) - The Saravan border crossing in southern Sistan and Baluchestan opened as the fifth border crossing between Iran and Pakistan to boost economic exchanges in the borderline region.

Iran PressIran News: Mobin Ali Mir, the director of border markets in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, said that the border crossing had been established with the aim of enhancing unity and supporting job creation as well as maintaining security.

The Saravan border crossing is expected to help boost economic exchanges in the borderline, the director said, noting that people living in border areas of both countries can economically assist each other via the export and import of goods in joint border markets.

Sistan and Baluchestan Province can play a key role in trade, foreign transit, and border exchanges thanks to their geographical situation because it has borderlines with both Pakistan and Afghanistan to the east.

Sistan and Baluchestan Province has also access to international waters to the south.

Sistan and Baluchestan Province possess about 1,600 kilometers of borderlines with Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Sea of Oman, so the Iranian province is one of the safest and easiest paths that can link Afghanistan and Pakistan to the Middle East, Europe, and Africa.

The province also has a special strategic and transit position, which is of great importance, especially due to the fact that Chabahar is the only ocean port in Iran.

Zahedan, the capital city of Sistan and Baluchestan Province, is scheduled to be connected to a nationwide railway, which can play a key role in the development of the western parts of the country.
