Three people were killed and two others wounded Friday in fresh violence in India's northeastern state of Manipur, local media reports quoted officials as saying.

"Two people died at the spot while the third succumbed to injuries later," a local newspaper Hindustan Times reported, quoting a police official.

Scheduled tribes in India are officially designated as disadvantaged socio-economic groups. They are given reservations in education and jobs to improve their lives.

The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes are officially designated groups of people and among the most disadvantaged socio-economic groups in India. The terms are recognized in the Constitution of India and the groups are designated in one or other of the categories.

Thousands of people took part in the rally, during which violence broke out between the tribals and non-tribals. Schools, houses, churches, vehicles and public properties were set ablaze by protesting mobs in the state.

Reports said over 100 people have died and another 40,000 displaced since the outbreak of the violence.
