IP- The US secretary of state says the UN can play a crucial role in allowing displaced civilians in Gaza to return home as Israel moves to a “lower intensity phase” of its military campaign.

Iran Press/ West Asia:  “Palestinian civilians must be able to return home as soon as conditions allow,” Blinken said. “They cannot – they must not – be pressed to leave Gaza.”

He rejected statements by Israeli officials calling for the mass displacement of Gaza residents.

The top US diplomat also said the Yemeni rebels’ attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea “are hurting people around the world”.

The Houthis have vowed to target Israel-linked ships until the war in Gaza stops.

“Over a dozen countries have made clear that the Houthis will be held accountable for future attacks,” Blinken said, referring to a US-led maritime coalition.
