Dozens of people killed as overloaded ferry sank in Tigris river near Mosul in Iraq, according to Iraqi sources.

Iran Press/Middle East: Dozens killed as a ferry overloaded with people celebrating the new year and Nowruz, sank in Tigris river near Mosul, according to Al Jazeera television network.

It is feared the numbers of victims to rise but some sources have counted 55 dead in the accident.

The head of Mosul’s Civil Defence Authority, Husam Khalil, told that most of the victims were women and children who could not swim.

"Search operations are still underway. The rescue team is still retrieving survivors and has rescued 12 people so far," Khalil added. 212/103/213
