Saudi-led coalition intensifies attacks on Yemen despite Stockholm agreement

Saudi attacks on Hodeidah continue while thousands of Yemenis in a rally on Friday called for Saudis commitment to a UN sponsored ceasefire agreed in Sweden.

The ceasefire sponsored by UN between Sanaa delegation and Riyadh delegation went into effect from 18 Dec 2018 in Hodeidah but the Saudi coalition violates the truce every day.

The warring parties in Yemen reached the ceasefire agreement on the Red Sea Ansarullah-held port of Hodeidah on December 13.

Hodeidah, a lifeline for millions of Yemenis, has seen some of the heaviest fighting in the Saudi-led aggression, which began in March 2015.

The fourth round of Yemen peace talks began on 6 December 2018 with the participation of Yemeni warring sides and headed by Martin Griffiths, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Yemen's affairs in Stockholm of Sweden and led to ceasefire agreement on Hodeidah on Thursday 13 December 2018.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates launched the Hodeidah offensive in June but have been facing strong resistance from Yemeni armed forces — led by the Houthi Ansarullah movement— as well as the city’s residents.

The imposed war on Yemen initially consisted of an aerial campaign, but was later coupled with a naval blockade and the deployment of ground mercenaries to Yemen.

Some 16,000 Yemenis have been killed and thousands more injured since the onset of the Saudi-led aggression.

The Saudi-led war has also taken a heavy toll on the country’s infrastructure, destroying hospitals, schools, and factories. The UN has already said that a record 22.2 million Yemenis are in dire need of food, including 8.4 million threatened by severe hunger. According to the world body, Yemen is suffering from the most severe famine in more than 100 years.

Saudi Arabia's military aggression has also hit Yemen's poor country with severe food and drug shortages.

The assaults of the Saudi-led coalition forces have failed to stop the Yemenis from resisting the aggression.
