Iran Press/Iran news: Antonio Guterres hopes the Iran nuclear deal can be preserved, his spokesman said on Wednesday, after Tehran announced it would stop complying with some of the commitments of the 2015 agreement, Anadolu reported.
UN spokesman Farhan Haq recalled that Guterres has consistently praised the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as a major achievement in nuclear non-proliferation and diplomacy and has contributed to regional and international peace and security.
Indicating that Tehran has lost its patience with Europe’s efforts to create a new viable financial mechanism that would allow European firms to trade with Iran, in his live TV on May 08 Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said: "Sections 26 and 36 of the JCPOA, the deal signed in 2015, allow Iran to take steps if one party withdraws from the agreement."
Iran's Supreme National Security Council said it no longer considered itself bound by the agreed restrictions on stocks of enriched uranium and heavy water.
On May 08, Iran revealed countermeasures to US’ withdrawal from the nuclear deal, giving the five remaining parties to JCPOA 60 days before reducing parts of its commitments to the agreement.
The move came exactly a year to the day US President Donald Trump withdrew America from the accord.
